So here is the definitive version (I hope) of the workaround: I hadn't noticed because I always launch Steam off line.
If PlayStation is the "best place to play" then mods should be a no-brainer.Correction: it appears that Steam must be in off line mode for the work around to work. Oh, and a wag of the finger at Sony who really needs to make this happen. Update: An earlier version of this post stated that PS4 was also covered by this mod. This gives PC and Xbox One players the ability to begin the game with an alternate start. Naturally, this mod and mods like it were available for vanilla Skyrim as well, but not on consoles. So far, I find it falls in decidedly "mixed-bag" territory, though being able to start without replaying the same intro was nice. I haven't played a ton of Skyrim SE yet, but will have some thoughts on the game soon. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, you've been arrested and thrown in the dungeons. Misery and despair have haunted you all your life. When you enter your login name, if you hit "Tab" rather than going to the Password line, you exit the menu. (It also has the most annoying sign-in menu I've ever seen. This replaces Steam Workshop, and requires a account. The mod is available on Nexus mods or through the in-game mod installer that uses. (It's not entirely new, of course, but you'll end up jumping into the game at a very different point, which is cool.) You can skip that long boring intro, get started with character creation right away and be on your merry way, seeing Skyrim from a new vantage. It's called "Alternate Start - Live Another Life" and it let's you start the game in a totally different scenario and setting. Well, if you're about to jump back into Skyrim now that the Special Edition remaster is out, here's the mod you need.
